Piña Colada

Monday morning we are please to discuss the 2009 Chew trade paperback: Tasters Choice.  From the minds of John Layman, and Rob Guillory comes a humorous look at police work, chicken prohibition, cannibalism, love, murder, psychic powers, and alien invasions.

Adam

Piña Colada

There are many recipes of how to make a piña colada but the one that his friends tell in the book of José L. Díaz de Villegas to be the original recipe created by Monchito, is the following:

3 oz Coconut Cream
6 oz Pineapple Juice
1.5 oz White Rum

Pour 3 ounces of coconut cream, 6 ounces of pineapple juice and 11⁄2 ounces of white rum into a blender or shaker with crushed ice, and blend or shake very well until smooth. Pour into chilled glass, garnish with pineapple wedge and/or a maraschino cherry

An alcoholic drink that you can both sip and chew on.

The Amelia Mintz

Monday morning we are please to discuss the 2009 Chew trade paperback: Tasters Choice.  From the minds of John Layman, and Rob Guillory comes a humorous look at police work, chicken prohibition, cannibalism, love, murder, psychic powers, and alien invasions.

Soak the Gummy Body Parts in a bottle of Vodka.  Done!

This little gem has come from the drunken mind of Q.

The Hot Pink

Todd

The Hot Pink

For the Beet, Celery, and Horseradish Shrub Syrup:

6 ounces celery, sliced 1/4 inch thick
1 medium beet (4 ounces), peeled and grated
1 tablespoon grated fresh horseradish, tightly packed
1 cup granulated sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup apple cider vinegar

For the Hot Pink Cocktail:

3/4 ounce Beet, Celery, and Horseradish Shrub
2 ounces Tanqueray gin
3 ounces seltzer

DIRECTIONS

  1. For the Beet, Celery, and Horseradish Shrub Syrup: Combine the celery, beets, horseradish, sugar, and salt in a quart jar. Shake to combine and refrigerate for 72 hours, shaking once a day to help dissolve the sugar.

  2. Strain the mixture through a fine mesh sieve, pressing the solids to extract as much of the syrupy liquid as possible. Discard solids and add the vinegar to the syrup. Refrigerate until ready to use.

  3. For the Hot Pink Cocktail: Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add shrub syrup and gin. Shake until well-chilled, about 20 seconds.

  4. Strain into an ice-filled highball glass, top with seltzer, stir to combine and serve.

Todd does not recommend this drink.  He was a brave soul, and put up with this drink for the good of the show, and for that we both salute him, and condem him for his stupidity.   If you want to feel the pains of Tony Chu's every day life, this might be a step in the right direction. But you will likely end up seriously wondering about your life choices.

The Kitty Pryde

On the next episode of the Funnybooks and Firewater podcast, we discuss the classic X-Men Arc, the Dark Phoenix Saga. Here is a preview of the panels drink choices to get you start your weekend.  On Monday you can rise from the ashes and join us for our discussion of the Dark Phoenix.

Q

The Kitty Pryde

Mix Sprite and Skittles

Q invented this drink.  Its virgin, cause, well Kitty Pryde is like 15 in the Dark Phoenix saga.

The Emma Frost

On the next episode of the Funnybooks and Firewater podcast, we discuss the classic X-Men Arc, the Dark Phoenix Saga. Here is a preview of the panels drink choices to get you start your weekend.  On Monday you can rise from the ashes and join us for our discussion of the Dark Phoenix.

Q

The Emma Frost

1 Part Vanilla Vodka
1 Part Sprite
1 splash of Key Lime Juice
1 Sliced Lemon
Optional: 1 oz Cranberry Juice
Optional: 1 oz Southern Comfort

Combine vodka, sprite and ice in a collins glass, then add the Key Lime juice and stir. Garnish with the lemon.

For a Scott and Emma, combine the cranberry juice and Southern Comfort in a  shot glass to server as a side car to the Emma Frost.

Q got this recipe from the ComicsAlliance page.

The Jean Grey / Phoenix

On the next episode of the Funnybooks and Firewater podcast, we discuss the classic X-Men Arc, the Dark Phoenix Saga. Here is a preview of the panels drink choices to get you start your weekend.  On Monday you can rise from the ashes and join us for our discussion of the Dark Phoenix.

Q

The Jean Grey / Phoenix

2 tsp 151-proof White Rum
1 Part Green Chartreuse
1 Part Midori
1 Part Vodka
1 Part Peach Schnapps
1 Part Grenadine

This cocktail consists of 3 carefully constructed parts, and you need a think Collins glass to serve it properly:

Part 1: Blend grenadine and beach schnapps with ice cubes.  You want a slushy mixer.  Pour this into the pre-chilled glass.

Part 2: Blend the Midori, Chartreuse & Vodka with ice to create the second, green layer.

Part 3: Layer the 151-proof rum on top of the drink so it floats.  Very carefully, light it on fire.  Use a splint or extended lighter, do not get this on you.

Bryan

Bryan will admit that it's a bit of a cheerleader drink.  But it can be dangerous, its sweet, but packs a punch.

Q's Bloody Mary

On Monday mornings episode, we are discussing Preacher: Gone to Texas.  To get your weekend started, we have drink recommendations from all of our panelists to get you in the Texas state of mind, and perhaps give the power of the Word of God.

Q

Celery salt

1 Lime wedge
2 oz Premium Vodka
4 oz Tomato juice
2 dashes Tabasco Sauce
2 tsp Prepared horseradish

Pour some celery salt onto a small plate.

Rub the juicy side of the lemon or lime wedge along the lip of a pint glass.

Roll the outer edge of the glass in celery salt until fully coated.

Fill with ice and set aside.

Squeeze the lemon and lime wedges into a shaker and drop them in.

Add the remaining ingredients and fill with ice.

Shake gently and strain into the prepared glass.

Garnish with a celery stalk and a lime wedge.

Todd's Preacher Drink Recommend

On Monday mornings episode, we are discussing Preacher: Gone to Texas.  To get your weekend started, we have drink recommendations from all of our panelists to get you in the Texas state of mind, and perhaps give the power of the Word of God.

Todd

A 6 Pack of Shiner Bock

Ok, its nothing fancy, but it's a Texas beer.  It may not get an A for creativity, but having a beer while reading Preacher sound like as good of a way to spend an afternoon as any.

The Ninja Turtle

This week, I made another attempt to be a bartender.  Since this week we are reading the 2015 revival of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, I did a google search, and found  recipe for a drink appropriately called, a Ninja Turtle.

It's a very simple drink to make, its basically a gin and juice (what up LBC!) with blue curaçao. That being said, its still pretty tasty.

0.5 oz Blue Curacao
1.5 oz Gin
1 fill Orange Juice

Mix it all together and you have a drink that is in no way guaranteed to give you mutant powers, but you will likely be singing the cartoon theme song for at least an hour.

May the 4th be With You

No sun ever sets on the evil empire, so of course there is no time off for a minion of the empire.  However, IF I were to get a day off, and on a Jedi holiday no less, I would like to relax with a Star Wars cocktail.  I haven't tried any of these personally, but I hope at some point I will be able to.  Enjoy, and May the force be with you!

Harrison Ford

1.5 oz Coffee Liqueur
3 oz Irish Cream
2.25 oz Vodka

Mix together with crushed ice in a glass and garnish with mint leaves.

-Ok, so its basically a white Russian, with a fun name, but its worth a shot.

Yoda

2 parts Apple Schnapps
1 part Blue Curacao
0.5 handful of ice
1 part Melon liqueur
1 part Sweet and Sour mix
1 splash Vodka

Mix together with crushed ice in a glass and garnish with mint leaves.

-Simple enough even I could make it.

Civil War - The Cocktail

The weekend is here, and Monday morning there will be a new episode of the Funnybooks and Firewater podcast discussing the 2007 Marvel event comic Civil War (just in time for the new Captain America movie coming out on Friday).  With a minor amount of internet research I found a recipe for a Civil War themed cocktail appropriately named, "The Civil War".

IMG_3666.JPG
6 oz Cola
1/2 oz Grenadine
2 oz Jack Daniels
2 oz Southern Comfort

Simply mix it all together in a glass with ice.  Garnish with mint leaves if you're feeling fancy.

When I was making this, I skipped the Grenadine (cause I didn't have any) and it turned out fine.  So good in fact, my wife even asked me to make one for her, and as we have stated before, I'm a terrible bar tender.
