Le Death in the Afternoon

Were taking out our first Manga this week with Death Note, written by Tsugumi Ohba and art by Takeshi Obata,.  An epic cat and mouse game between a brilliant teen who can easily kill just by writing down a name, and the detective determined to catch the killer.

  • Vanilla Infused Absinthe
  • Fresh Pineapple juice
  • Fresh Lemon Juice
  • Squid Ink
  • Moet & Champagne

We have done death in the afternoon before, (see the Lock and Key Episode where Todd and Bryan picked the same drink), but this week Q found a variation.  This was taken from a bars menu, so we don't have the exact measurements, so please experiment.  The squid ink is the big change here, making for a nice black cocktail.

New York Gin and Juice

This week we enter the Demilitarized Zone, AKA the DMZ, AKA Manhattan.  The story takes us thru a war torn New York in the center of a second American Civil War. Vertigo presents DMZ, a tale from expertly written by Brian Wood with beautiful Art by Riccardo Burchielli.

  • 2 ounces London Dry-style gin
  • 1 ounce fresh lime juice
  • 1 ½ ounces ruby grapefruit juice
  • ½ ounce simple syrup

Todd variation on the standard gin and juice.

Locals Only Manhattan

This week we enter the Demilitarized Zone, AKA the DMZ, AKA Manhattan.  The story takes us thru a war torn New York in the center of a second American Civil War. Vertigo presents DMZ, a tale from expertly written by Brian Wood with beautiful Art by Riccardo Burchielli.

  • 1.5 oz Rye Whiskey
  • 1.75 oz Sweet Vermouth
  • .5 oz Grand Marnier
  • 3 dashes Angostura Bitters

Add all the ingredients to a mixing glass and fill with ice. Stir, and strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with a lemon twist.

This is a bit on the sweeter side as Manhattans go.  Q changed the name from the Employees Only Manhattan, to the Locals Only Manhattan.  We're assuming that the Employees Only is a reference to the famous Employees Only Speak Easy in New York.  Not sure if it is still on Netflix, but there was a documentary on there called Hey Bartender, about the bartenders at Employees only.  Worth checking out if you are so inclined.

Dark 'N Stormy

This week we enter the Demilitarized Zone, AKA the DMZ, AKA Manhattan.  The story takes us thru a war torn New York in the center of a second American Civil War. Vertigo presents DMZ, a tale from expertly written by Brian Wood with beautiful Art by Riccardo Burchielli.

  • 2 oz Dark Rum
  • 1/2 to 3/4 oz Lime Juice
  • 4 oz Ginger Beer

Add rum and lime juice to a glass.  And Ice and stir.  Top with ginger beer and garnish with a lime wheel if you so desire.

Note: Adjust the line/ginger according to the sweetness of the rum/ginger beer.

It may be a bit of a stretch, but Bryan likes this simple cocktail, and things are "Dark and Stormy" for America, Manhattan, and the characters in DMZ.

Bombed Out Manhattan

Adams cocktail is a variation on the Long Island Iced tea, and is likely to get you bombed while you read DMZ.

Hard Drinking Woman

In this weeks episode we discuss the first trade paperback of Jessica Jones.  If you were old school, and read it when it first came out like Q, you know it as Alias, if you only heard about it because of the Netflix show, it was released as Jessica Jones:Alias.  Either way, we read and discuss the book, share some cocktails, and discuss the soap opera that comics stories can be.

Todd and Q had similar Ideas, so we put them together for a cocktail twofer.

Private Dick

Q

A Lonely Office

Vodka Infused with Black Tea
Ginger Syrup
Lemon Juice
Club Soda

Adam got this recipe from a Private Detective agency themed speak easy.  The actual measurements are still a bit of a mystery, but that may just add to the fun as you investigate this cocktail further. The actually recipe calls for lemon juice, black pepper and clove tinctures, and coconut marmalade as well, but Adam just replaced them with Club soda for his own home version.

Sweet Christmas!

6 Parts Bison Grass Flavored Vodka
1 Part Violet Liqueur
4 On Cocktail Sticks Blueberries

Fill a mixing glass with ice cubes. Add all ingredients. Stir and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with blueberry.

It's a drink from Q, so of course it has vodka in it.

Bad Day At Work

1 cup sugar
1 ½ ounces Bluecoat or other high-quality gin
4 ounces clementine orange juice (from about 3 to 5 clementines)
Generous splash of seltzer

PREPARATION

  1. Fill a tumbler with crushed ice and set aside.
  2. Make simple syrup: In a small saucepan, mix the sugar with 1 cup water. Simmer over low heat until sugar dissolves. Set aside to cool, about 5 minutes.
  3. In a shaker, combine the gin and orange juice with 1 teaspoon simple syrup. (Remaining syrup can be refrigerated for up to 1 week.) Shake well, and pour into the tumbler. Top with a splash of seltzer, add a stirrer and serve.

Ok, so I got this recipe form the New York Times.  So the making your own simple syrup thing may be a bit over kill. Especially if you truly have had a bad day and this cocktail quickly.

2 oz. UV Cherry Vodka
4 oz. Cactus Cooler
2 dashes of Orange Bitters

Add all ingredients to glass, stir and add ice. It's that simple! Just be careful not to overindulge. It tastes like happy in a glass without a hint of alcohol. Also, do not under ANY circumstances do shots of the vodka.

Adam created this drink, cause he couldn't figure out how to say the name of the book.

2 oz. Midori melon liqueur
2 oz. Peach Schnapps
2 oz. Cranberry Juice
3 oz. Orange Juice
1 oz. Pineapple Juice

Fill hurricane glass with ice. Add ingredients in order listed. Don't stir! Should have three layers; green, orange, and red. Garnish with a cherry.

If done right your glass should look like Wonder Woman.  If you do it wrong, You still have a tasty beverage.
