Ep 120 - Animisoty

This Week: We finish our month of animal books with Animosity. One day, for no reason, the Animals woke up. They started thinking. They started talking. They started taking REVENGE. Collecting the first four issues of the best-selling series, plus the special one-shot issue ANIMOSITY: THE RISE. The world is plunged into chaos as the newly-intelligent Animals fight humanity, and simply fight each other, for their own life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness. In the midst of the turmoil is Jesse, an 11-year-old girl, and her dog, Sandor, who is devoted to her and her protection. One year after the incident, Jesse and Sandor begin a cross-country journey to find Jesse's half-brother, Adam, who is living in San Francisco.


Drinking Game:

Secret Word! - Whenever someone says “Kill” take a drink.

You Have My Paws - Anytime Sandor threatens what will happen if anything happens to Jesse, take a drink.

Everybody is going to Die -  Whenever a character dies, take a drink.

They Are Making a Pokemon Reference - When the whale shows up goes “humpback wale’ did I do it right?” Pound your drink.


Cocktails

Bloodhound

  • 1.5 oz Leopold’s Gin
  • 0.75 oz Dry Vermouth
  • 0.75 oz Sweet Vermouth
  • 2-3 Crushed Strawberries

Add all ingredients to a mixing glass

Shake with ice and double strain into a coupe

Garnish with a fresh strawberry


Salty Dog

  • 3 1/3 oz Grapefruit Juice
  • 1 1/3 oz Vodka or Gin

Shake the shit out of it, and strain into a salt-rimmed highball glass.


Sandor

  • 1.5 oz gin
  • 3 tablespoons Blood Orange syrup
  • Soda water
  • Twist of blood orange,

Add several ice cubes to a highball glass. Pour in gin and syrup and mix well.  Top with another park (or half part) soda water and twist.

 

Spiced Blood Orange Syrup

  • 2 cups blood orange juice, strained
  • 6 tablespoons of sugar
  • 10 pods green cardamon, lightly crushed with the back of a knife
  • 5 peppercorns
  • Juice of one lime

Combine ingredients in a bevy-bottomed saucepan and bring to a boil, stirring occasionally.

Let the mixture boil until reduced by half, about 20 min.

Remove from heat and let cool before straining into a car or other storage vessel.

Ep 119 - Elmer - Show Notes

This Week: Elmer is a window into a world where chickens have suddenly acquired the intelligence and consciousness of humans, where they can now consider themselves a race no different than browns, black, or whites. Recognizing themselves to be sentient, the inexplicably evolved chickens push to attain rights for themselves as the newest members of the human race.

Originally self-published by the author in the Philippines, this is the first US edition of the book.


Drinking Game

And Now I’m a Vegan - Take a drink for every time your traumatized into considering never eating chicken/ or animals again. 

Chicken Fucker - Anytime the word chicken appears on a page (max 1 per page) take a drink. 

Your Terrible, Muriel! - Every time you’re rimided or show how horrible humans are, take a drink. 

Tests like Cannibalism - Take a drink every time eating chicken is mentioned. 


Cocktail

Sweet Corn Cocktail

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup fresh corn kernels
  • 1/2 ounce freshly squeezed lime juice
  • 1/2 ounce demerara syrup (see note)
  • 1 1/2 ounce dark rum
  • 3 drops mole bitters
  • Ice

Directions

Muddle the corn in the bottom of a cocktail shaker until the kernels are mashed and a milky liquid forms.

Add the lime juice, demerara syrup, rum and bitters. Fill shaker with ice and shake for about 10 seconds.

Using both the cocktail strainer and a fine mesh strainer, strain the cocktail into a glass.

Note: for the demerara syrup, mix equal parts demerara sugar and water in a saucepan over medium heat until sugar dissolves. Let cool before using.


Chicken Soup Hot Toddy

  • 1 oz Nolets gin
  • 1 dash celery bitters
  • .25 oz freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 4 oz Chicken Stock, Heated
  • Garnish: Carrot Stick, Celery Stick, Parsley

Pour all ingredients into snifter.  Garnish,


Prairie Chicken

  • Gin
  • Raw Egg yolk
  • Salt and Pepper

Red Rooster

  • 2 oz vodka
  • 4 oz Cranberry juice
  • 1/2 oz orange juice
  • 1 cup ice

Fill tall glass with ice.  Pour in vodka, pour 3/4 full with cranberry juice, top with orange juice.

This Week: As a part of the acclaimed DC Comics—The New 52 event of September 2011, Animal Man Buddy Baker, has gone from "super" man to family man–but is he strong enough to hold his family together when Maxine, his young daughter, starts to manifest her own dangerous powers? As these new abilities continue to terrify Buddy and his wife Ellen, things take a turn for the worse as Buddy begins a startling transformation of his own that will lead him on a journey into the heart of The Red. Collected here are the first 6 issues of this dramatic new series from writer Jeff Lemire (Sweet Tooth) and artist Travel Foreman (The Immortal Iron Fist)!

Kids are Creepy - Every time the Maxine does something creepy, take a drink. 

Animal Farm - Every time they show an animal, or name an animal, take a drink. 

Gaaah - Take a drink every time you are creeped out by the art.


Cocktails

Blood and Burbon

  • 1 ounce blood orange liqueur (Solerno)
  • 1 ounce sweet vermouth (Carpano Antica Red Vermouth)
  • 1 ounce bourbon whiskey (Woodford Reserve Bourbon)
  • 1–2 dashes orange bitters (The Bitter Truth)
  • 6 small leaves tarragon
  • Garnish: orange peel

 

  • Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice.
  • Shake briskly 15 times.
  • Double strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
  • Garnish with the zest of a fresh orange swath before lightly placing it into the cocktail.

Into the Red

  • 1.5 oz Vodka
  • 1.5 oz Peach Schnapps
  • 1.5 oz Southern Comfort
  • 1.5 oz Gin
  • 2 oz Tripple Sec
  • 2 oz orange juice

Add all into a shaker with ice.  Add as much grenadine as you want to make it as sweet or as red as you would like. Shake the shit out of it, and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. 


Zombie 2

  • 1 oz Light Rum
  • 1 oz Dark Rum
  • 1 oz Orange Curacou
  • 0.5 oz Lime Juice
  • 0.5 oz Lemmon Juice
  • 1.5 oz orange juice
  • 1.5 oz passion fruit puree
  • 0.25 oz Grenadine
  • 2 dashes of Angostura Bitters
  • 0.5 oz 151 Dark Rum

Shake the shit out of all ingredients. fill into hurricane glass and garnish with a sprig of mint.

This Week: This seminal book collects the classic original Usagi stories chronicling a time of settling unrest and political intrigue, told through the story of a wandering and masterless samurai named Miyamoto Usagi, AKA Usagi Yojimbo! Plus, We are joined by special guest: Amy from the English Class Hooligans Podcast. 


Drinking Game

Say My Name, Say My Name - Every time He introduces himself, take a drink.  

Little Critters - Take a drink when ever you see the little dinosaurs/lizard creatures. 

Battle Cry - Every time Usagi makes a cry that goes across the entire page, take a drink.

Cocktails 

Nagasaki  

  • Half Egg Nog 
  • Half Saki

From an Episode of the Office.  May be a total joke.  


Ronin

  • 3 oz Chilled Saki
  • 1 oz Cranberry juice
  • 2 lime wedges

Shake Saki, Cranberry juice, and the juice of one lime wedge together over ice.  Strain into a glass, top with lemon lime soda, and garnish with second lime wedge. 


Swoned

  • 1/4 cup of Zucinni water
  •  (Shred Zucinni, place in cheese cloth, and squeeze out all the water)
  • 2 table spoons of lemon simple syrup
  • 1/4 cup of saki

Shake the shit out of all ingredients. Pour over ice.  Garnish with strip of zucinni. 


Smiling Rabbit

  • 1 1⁄2 oz Espadín mezcal
  • 3⁄4 oz Fresh lemon juice
  • 1⁄2 oz pineapple-cinnamon syrup*
  • 1⁄4 oz Suze apéritif
  • 1⁄4 oz Yellow Chartreuse

Add all the ingredients to a cocktail shaker with ice and shake until well-chilled.

Strain into a rocks glass over fresh ice, and garnish with a pineapple leaf.

*Pineapple-cinnamon syrup: Bring 1 cup sugar and 1 cup water to a boil, and simmer until sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat, add 1 cup fresh pineapple chunks and 4 cinnamon sticks, and steep for 30 minutes. Remove solids, and store in the refrigerator.

Ep 116 - We3 - Show Notes

This Week we start our month of Animal books in a theme we’re calling: Animal Farm.  First up is We3.  With nervous systems amplified to match their terrifying mechanical exoskeletons, the members of Animal Weapon 3 (WE3) have the firepower of a battalion between them. But they are just the program's prototypes, and now that their testing is complete, they're slated to be permanently "decommissioned," causing them to seize their one chance to make a desperate run for freedom. Relentlessly pursued by their makers, the WE3 team must navigate a frightening and confusing world where their instincts and heightened abilities make them as much a threat as those hunting them - but a world, nonetheless, in which somewhere there is something called "home."


Drinking Game

The Magic Number - Anytime the number 3 appears, take a drink.  

Gud Boys and Girls-  Anytime the animals say the word gud, spelled gud, take a drink

Strong but Silent - Take a drink on every page without dialogue. 

Drink all the Feels -  When you want to cry at the end of the book, finish off the bottle, and drink all those pesky feelings away.


Cocktails 

Salty Dog

  • 1 1/2 oz. Vodka
  • Top with Grapefruit Juice
  • Salt Rim

Bulldog Rush

  • 2 oz burbon
  • 3/4 oz Cointreau
  • 1/2  a peach, pitted
  • 1/2 a lemon
  • 1 tsp sugar cane syrup
  • 6 to 8 mint leaves

Muddle the peach, lemon, syrup, and mint together, then add the bourbon and cointreau.  Strain it and serve over crushed ice.  


Rabbits Blood 

  • 1 oz Southern Comfort
  • 1/2 oz Vanilla Vodka
  • 1/2 oz sloe gin
  • 1/2 oz cointreau
  • 1/2 oz Amaretto
  • 1/2 oz Lemon Juice
  • 4 oz Orange Juice
  • 1 Orange Wedge
  • Ice Cubes or Crushed Ice

Gud Rabbit

  • 1 1/2 oz Espadin Mezcal
  • 3/4 oz Fresh Lemon Juice
  • 1/2 oz Pineapple-Cinnamon Syrup

 

 

  • 1/4 ox Suze Aperitif
  • 1/4 Yellow Chartreuse 

Pineapple-Cinnamon Syrup

  1. Brink 1 cup sugar and 1 cup water to a boil and simmer until sugar is dissolved.
  2. Remove from heat, add 1 cup fresh pineapple chunks and 4 cinnamon sticks and steep for 30 minutes
  3. Remove solids and store in the refrigerator
